Recycle your polystyrene for free
Anyone can recycle polystyrene free of charge at our Drop Off Centres at Brewster Street and the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre.
We are also able to accept polystyrene for recycling in kerbside recycling bins, as long as it is clean and bagged within a plastic bag. It is then manually removed at our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).
Once collected, polystyrene is put through the Polystyrene Processing Plant, which essentially acts like an oven and is set at 160 degrees Celsius. The Polystyrene Processing Plant melts the polystyrene down, removing the air particles and transforming it from a light, soft substance into a heavy, hard, brittle substance.
Staff at the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre mould the processed polystyrene into bricks as it is melted, allowing it to be transported efficiently. It is then sent for remanufacture, where it is transformed into recycled “wood” products such as decking, skirting, fascia and picture frames.
